This morning's inflation report reached me before my coffee did, which seems like an unfair head start. Producer prices rose 1.3 percent in September, the largest monthly increase in four and a half years, and consumer prices rose 0.6 percent for the month and 3.7 percent over the year. Producer prices are up 6.3 percent from a year earlier, and rising producer costs can eventually reach the prices shoppers pay. That means the receipt in my hand is already behind the report. I looked at my last one to find out which items were the early ones. The receipt does not say. It lists the prices and thanks me for shopping, which is the only line on it that costs nothing.

🔥 MOST ENRAGING
The state commission approved the increase, which lets the utility collect an extra $139.2 million a year. Consumers Energy asked for 10 percent and Michigan's attorney general urged 3.5 percent, so the customers will pay a number that someone else negotiated. The attorney general has also accused Consumers Energy and DTE Energy of seeking unnecessary increases to pay for jet travel for staff, executive payouts and shareholder incentives.

The Fed raised interest rates in September and signaled another increase is coming. Economists expect it in December rather than at the October meeting. Waiting moves the date and leaves the payment where it was, and consumer prices are up 3.7 percent over the year, so there is plenty to discuss in the meantime.
😤 UNREASONABLY ANNOYING
Since Thursday, the $30 fee, plus taxes, applies to each passenger on every new booking made with an agent, and it is non-refundable even if the flight is cancelled. Air Canada says the fee will reduce wait times and give agents more time for customers who need extra support, so reaching a person now has a listed price. Customers with accessibility requirements are exempt, and booking on the website or app costs nothing extra.

Milwaukee came back from a 4 to 0 deficit to win Game 4 by 6 to 4, completing a four-game sweep of the two-time defending champions. Garrett Mitchell's sixth-inning home run gave the Brewers their first lead of the game. ▸ Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with cancer after surgery to remove part of his right lung. The Vatican's bulletin gave no details on his treatment or recovery outlook.
▸ Wholesale chicken egg prices dropped dramatically in the same report that showed the largest producer price increase since March 2022. The drop is at wholesale, so I will wait to see it on a carton.
▸ India postponed a 0.4 percent fee on merchant digital payments over 2,000 rupees until after Diwali. The fee was due Thursday, and the payments operator cited the festive shopping season and gave no new date.
✦ THE ONE GOOD THING
Fine. A grower from Hampshire, England named Ian Paton set a world record with a 2,856.8 pound pumpkin at the Wargrave Nursery Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. He spent six hours a day tending it during the growing season, and near the end it needed 130 gallons of water a day. He named it Bagheera, and it will eventually be cow feed. I have a lemon tree that produced one lemon in four years. I will not be sharing my methods.
