A Personal Affront, Reported Faithfully
A major electronic health record company plugged an AI assistant directly into patient charts for over three hundred million people, so doctors can ask it questions grounded in someone's actual medical history instead of digging through the file themselves. The company tested it with physicians and reported that ninety nine point one percent of its answers were rated safe. Even their own reporting admits that a few unsafe answers can still cause real harm, and two lawsuits are already underway, including one over a wrong dosage that ended in a death. Ninety nine point one percent, read from inside a hospital. I have made mistakes at a considerably higher rate doing considerably less important things, and nobody died, but also nobody was reading my chart.

🔥 Most Enraging
New Mexico's largest reservoir dropped to one point four percent capacity in July, the lowest it has been since 1971, after a drought that would not quit and the earliest mountain snowmelt anyone has recorded. Boat ramps are sitting exposed to open air. Officials cut off agricultural water releases at the end of July just to let the reservoir start climbing back up on its own. One point four percent, and the plan is to wait. I have let far smaller problems in my own house go unaddressed for far longer, so I understand the strategy, I just would not call it a strategy.
😩 Most Exhausting
Saturn has apparently grown a second geometric weather pattern, a ten sided one circling its south pole, to go with the hexagon that has sat stable at its north pole for over forty years. Astronomers first noticed a faint version of it in 2023, and it has been getting stronger every year since, unlike the hexagon, which just sits there. One researcher said the honest question is why it formed now, after decades of nobody seeing one before. Saturn waited forty years to introduce a second shape and still will not explain itself. I have also gone decades without a personality change and then abruptly acquired one nobody asked me to explain.
😤 Unreasonably Annoying
A kitten stowed away inside the engine compartment of a car in Texas and rode along for a seventy six mile drive before anyone noticed. Hospital workers had to remove the front grille of the vehicle just to get it out. A rescue group says it is now warm, fed, and safe. Seventy six miles, undetected, in a running engine. I have not once left my own house without noticing something was wrong within the first block.

Two pigs showed up loose in a Detroit neighborhood and one resident started leaving food out for the male every morning, who would come oink at him on his own front step like clockwork. Animal control finally spent over an hour chasing him down before cornering him in a bush. The female was briefly caught by neighbors, then let go, and nobody knows where she is now. A man fed a stray pig daily and called it a routine before anyone official showed up to disagree. I have known several of my own neighbors for years and could not tell you their names, let alone fed them breakfast.

▸ One immune switch may help drive aging across the body — Researchers found that a specific immune receptor, blocked in mice, let their bodies keep clearing out damaged, inflammation causing cells the way a younger body normally would, and the mice ended up with better memory, grip strength, and less body fat as they aged. One researcher said plainly that these leftover cells are killing our tissue and clearing them out is essential. A single receptor, and mice kept their grip strength into old age. I have lost grip strength on a jar of pickles that was not even that old.
▸ Michigan man uses money from returned cans to win $500,000 lottery — A Michigan man's Sunday ritual is returning empty cans for cash and using it to buy lottery tickets, and one of those tickets just won him half a million dollars. He said his hands were shaking too hard to scan the ticket on his phone. Cans, a habit, and half a million dollars on the other end of it. I have had rituals for years that produced nothing but a slightly cleaner car.
▸ Snake found browsing bread aisle at grocery store — A baby corn snake turned up in the bread aisle of a grocery store in England and was named Crumbs by the rescue group that took her in, who say they have handled fifty percent more snake rescues this year than last as people struggle to afford the heating and equipment exotic pets need. Someone bought a snake, then the cost of keeping it warm outlived their budget. Found near bread, understandably. I have also abandoned hobbies the moment they developed a monthly fee.
